The intended audience for this product is aimed for girls. The values and opinions this target audience holds is that it is okay to be a girl and to run like a girl and throw like a girl. Doing something like a girl is not an insult and it shouldn't be used like one anymore. Always appealed to the target audiences values and opinions and made it clear that yes girls run, throw and do many others things like a girl but that doesn't mean they aren't good enough to do these things. Always had girls stand in front of the camera and explain that doing something like a girl lowers their confidence. Society and people have created a certain way that girls run, throw and fight and these girls in this video showed that they don't really throw, fight or run the way people imagine them, they are girls but that doesn't mean that they should be insulted by saying they do these things like a girl. One girl stated that she walks like a girl, runs like a girl and wakes up like a girl but she is not ashamed of that and no one else should be.
Within this text the major social and cultural connotation that was used was the phrase "like a girl". Always used the phrase "like a girl" through this whole video backed up by how this phrase can lower self-esteem and confidence and even though this phrase is an insult we should not be ashamed of it. There weren't really pictures but there were short clips of many different girls performing how to throw, hit, run and many other things that help get the point of this commercial across. Always used the same background throughout the commercial and it was a dark blue and gray mixed color. Always used their production cameras as technology but once they made this commercial, technology expanded into TV, computers, and cellphones.
The overall purpose for this commercial was to persuade the viewers but it does more than that. Always created this commercial to show that "like a girl" was a hurtful insult and as girls are going through puberty they are really trying to find out who they are and they are confused because they are being put down by how society views how they do things as a girl. Always wanted to bring in girls and even guys to show examples of how people imagine what girls do when they throw, run, fight and hit. As they showed examples of these they also started showing that what people imagine isn't how girls really do things. Always wanted to inform their viewers that it is not okay to use this as an insult because girls should not be ashamed that they do things like a girl. They wanted to let their audience know that being told you do something like a girl should make you proud and it shouldn't make you feel less than what you truly are. So while informing and persuading their audience they also created a new aspect of how girls do things.
This commercial is very successful in achieving their goal. Always used not just actors and actresses but real girls and boys to do this commercial and to explain how "like a girl" is insulting and to express their feelings in why it should change. By using these boys and girls it helped their case extremely because it allowed the audience to really trust in what they were saying. By the examples they gave and by using boys especially I think it helped to show that like a girl is nothing to be ashamed of. Towards the end the girls and boys were asked questions that help the audience realize that it is okay to do things like a girl because we are girls and we can do things as good as boys can. It's not just how society views us in one specific way, it's how we really do things and how no one see's the real us. Always used a lot of great elements to help their commercial reach the intended viewers and I think they did a great job overall.
I love this video so much. I remember watching it when it first came out. I believe the purpose of this video is to help girls and even boys believe that girls can do anything that a boy can do. The audience would be boys and girls of all ages. This video can speak to anyone. I know grown men that still tell their friends that they throw like a girl. It is suppose to be an insult, but when someone tells me I throw like a girl I take it as a compliment. Great post.
ReplyDeleteI have as well heard guys say that too and especially to each other jokingly. Thank you!
DeleteLOVE this commerical! I definitely feel like this ad is successful in portraying it's message in a positive way. We, not just girls but men included, can do anything we put our minds to! I feel that it doesn't just speak to the ladies, but the men if they allow it. I hope as our generation evolves they stop referring to the phrase in a negative way.
ReplyDeleteYes, now thinking about it I can definitely see the audience also being guys as well. I hope we also to stop using it in a negative way. I've been told so many times that I throw like a girl and I hate hearing it in a negative way.
